sustainability

A new sustainability benchmark for the East LA College campus, this design-build project obtained a LEED Gold certification. The 133,000-square foot, five-story building has a unique, porous design to enable the constant flow of activities in and out, to and between the parking structure, quad, Bailey Library, new campus center, bookstore, and student services building. Inside the facility, the elements promote active engagement and communication skills, not only within the classroom, but through the provision of hands-on laboratories, tutoring services, informal and formal meeting and study spaces, and accessible faculty offices. To promote interdepartmental collaboration, unassigned spaces are shared by multiple departments and include a large 100-student FLEX classroom, six unassigned 1,000-square foot classrooms, conference rooms, kitchenettes, and informal study areas. Its sustainable features enhance the user experience through natural daylight and ventilation. In addition, the courtyard spaces bring landscape and gathering opportunities immediately adjacent to program space. This project was constructed on an active campus and was governed by DSA.
